Summary

AMD is sampling the Versal AI Core XQRVC1902 in an organic lidless space-grade package; Class Y testing is in progress and flight-qualified units are expected in 2H 2027.

Overview

On 1 October 2026 AMD announced sampling, with early access customers, of the Versal AI Core XQRVC1902 adaptive SoC in an enhanced space-grade package. AMD describes the package as an organic lidless design, developed by AMD, intended to support space missions lasting up to 15 years.

AMD says it is currently testing the device to the U.S. military specification MIL-PRF-38535 Class Y, which the release calls the highest level of quality and reliability under the standard for spaceflight components. Class Y flight-qualified units are expected in the second half of 2027, so the parts being sampled are not described as qualified yet.

The package uses conservative design rules and an enhanced organic substrate material to mitigate thermal and mechanical stress in space, combined with space-grade chip capacitors that AMD says have established flight heritage. AMD states that the lidless design improves thermal performance.

The new package is pin-compatible with existing Versal AI Core VC1902 commercial, defense-grade and space-grade devices in the 2197 ball grid array package. AMD names human-rated and long-duration missions, geosynchronous Earth orbit, cislunar orbit, heliocentric orbit and deep space as examples of missions the device targets. The device is described in AMD datasheet DS946.

The release contains no radiation figures, and none are quoted here. A separate AMD space solutions page says AMD reports total ionizing dose (TID) and single event effects characterization for its space-grade products; the release does not tie those results to the new package.

Engineering benefit

The release states pin compatibility with VC1902 commercial, defense-grade and space-grade devices in the 2197 BGA, which can ease reuse of board footprints between development and flight hardware. Inference: the footprint reuse is our reading of pin compatibility; the release does not claim board-level interchangeability, and thermal and qualification differences remain. Commercial benefit

AMD gives a schedule marker: sampling with early access customers now and Class Y flight-qualified units expected in the second half of 2027. No pricing, lead times or ordering terms are given in the release. Source: https://newsroom.amd.com/news/amd-sampling-versal-ai-core-adaptive-soc/. Checked: 2026-10-02. Confidence: 5/5.

Community benefit

The release points to the public datasheet page DS946 and states that the package is meant to cover programmes from commercial "new space" missions using commercial off-the-shelf devices to human-rated missions. Inference: public documentation helps teams outside the early access group evaluate the device; the release does not state access terms for DS946 content. Critical review

Sampling is not qualification: AMD says it is testing to Class Y and expects flight-qualified units in the second half of 2027; the release subtitle says the package "will be" Class Y qualified, which is a plan. Source: https://newsroom.amd.com/news/amd-sampling-versal-ai-core-adaptive-soc/. Checked: 2026-10-02. Confidence: 5/5.

The release has no radiation data; AMD radiation tables on its space page are given for Versal XQR adaptive SoCs in general, so they should not be assumed to describe the new lidless package. Source: https://www.amd.com/en/solutions/aerospace-and-defense/space.html. Checked: 2026-10-02. Confidence: 4/5.

The source is a vendor press release; the claims about thermal improvement and flight heritage of capacitors are AMD statements without independent confirmation. Source: https://newsroom.amd.com/news/amd-sampling-versal-ai-core-adaptive-soc/. Checked: 2026-10-02. Confidence: 4/5.

The release names the standard (MIL-PRF-38535 Class Y), the datasheet (DS946), the package family (2197 BGA) and a date window, so the core claims are checkable. Source: https://newsroom.amd.com/news/amd-sampling-versal-ai-core-adaptive-soc/. Checked: 2026-10-02. Confidence: 5/5.

Practical recommendations

If you plan an engineering model on these samples, ask AMD in writing which Class Y test groups are complete and which are pending before fixing a schedule; the release only gives a second-half-2027 expectation.

Keep "samples" and "flight-qualified units" on separate lines of the project plan: a press release is a dated invitation to ask questions, not a flight certificate.
